Need clarity on hybrid car duties under FTAs: Lamborghini CEO

Unlike combustion-run cars, hybrids have so far been outside the purview of India’s free-trade agreements with the European Union and the United Kingdom aimed at lowering high import duties. This means Lamborghini’s current entire line-up, including the Urus, Temerario and Revuelto plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), does not qualify for lower taxes. Meanwhile, rival brands such as Ferrari and McLaren have already started adjusting prices of their ICE models in anticipation of the India-EU and India-UK FTAs, with potential price cuts of up to Rs 3.3 crore.

Lamborghini India has been enjoying a strong run, selling over 100 cars each in the last three years. Speaking to Autocar India, Automobili Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said, “Until last year, we had a very good involvement in the Indian market… This year, we have to see. The situation is a bit different because we have new rules in the Indian market for import taxes, and we have to see if this is applying in a positive way for plug-in hybrid cars as well.”

When asked if customers may hold back purchases while waiting for clarity on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and its impact on import duties, Winkelmann replied, “It is too early to speak about that because we are now four months into the year. We have to see how they are going to behave because the rules have to be very clear. Then, I think there is an opportunity for further development in the Indian market.” At the same time, he mentioned that India has a lot of untapped potential.

Lamborghini sales in 2024 and 2025

The Italian marque sold over 100 cars for the first time in the country in 2023. Then, it sold a record 113 cars in 2024, followed by 111 units in 2025. While overall sales dipped slightly last year, the company says Urus deliveries grew by 17 percent. Demand for the flagship Revuelto is also strong, with the order book already filled until the end of 2026.
