As part of their mid-lifecycle updates, AMG has revealed the updated GLS 63 and GLE 63 S SUVs with the new M177 EVO twin-turbo V8 engine. It features a motorsport-inspired flat-plane crankshaft, which reduces rotating masses, improves the engine’s ability to rev and ensures precise response. While the output remains unchanged, AMG claims the new motor is more fuel efficient. This comes after the facelifts of the standard Mercedes GLE and GLS SUVs were revealed in April 2026.
The 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine makes 612hp on its own, while a 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator adds another 23hp. The starter generator also provides additional torque at low revs, enables energy recuperation during deceleration and supports smooth engine restarts. The AMG GLE 63 S takes 3.9 seconds to hit the 100kph mark from rest, while the GLS 63 does the same in 4.2 seconds. Both come with AWD as standard and have a top speed of 280kph.
In addition to the flat-plane crankshaft, the new-generation V8 also gets a revised firing order, updated fuel injection, new intake and exhaust ports, a reworked camshaft and a new turbocharger housing. AMG has also updated the exhaust system, which can adjust its flaps automatically to change the engine note. There is also a revised active ride control system to reduce body roll. The front and rear driveshafts have been strengthened to handle the extra torque, while the GLS also gets a rear axle locking system. To meet latest emission standards, a particulate filter will be standard.
This change is part of AMG’s move away from plug-in hybrids and back to mild-hybrid V8s. Reportedly, the upcoming update for the AMG C 63 will return to a V8 from its current plug-in hybrid setup. Even the non-AMG S 580 variant of the facelifted S-Class already uses the same M177 EVO engine.
