Toyota hybrid sales cross 3 lakh mark in India

Share

Toyota announced that its cumulative hybrid vehicle sales in India have surpassed 3 lakh units. The company said this milestone reflects growing acceptance of strong-hybrid technology among Indian buyers, driven by better fuel efficiency and the convenience of not needing external charging infrastructure.

Toyota currently sells four strong-hybrid models in India: the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova Hycross, Camry and Vellfire. It also offers an 8-year warranty on the hybrid battery pack.

Hybrid adoption has expanded beyond premium cars

While Honda was the first carmaker to introduce strong-hybrid technology in India with the Civic Hybrid, Toyota later brought hybrids back into focus with its Camry sedan. However, hybrid technology remained largely limited to premium segments for several years before the arrival of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Innova Hycross.

The Hyryder and Hycross have helped bring strong-hybrid technology into the mainstream SUV and MPV segments, particularly among buyers seeking better fuel efficiency without moving to a fully electric vehicle.

Toyota reiterates multi-pathway strategy

Toyota said the milestone reinforces its “multi-pathway” approach towards lower-emission mobility solutions. Alongside hybrid vehicles, the company continues to evaluate and develop plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, fuel-cell vehicles and flex-fuel technologies globally.

Commenting on the milestone, Sabari Manohar, executive vice president, Sales-Service-Used Car business at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “We are immensely proud to achieve the milestone of 3 lakh hybrid vehicle sales in India, reflecting the strong and growing customer trust in Toyota’s self-charging hybrid electric technology.”

Toyota’s self-charging hybrid system combines a petrol engine and electric motor, with the battery being charged through regenerative braking and engine power, eliminating the need for external charging.
