The Volkswagen Taigun, which turned five years old last month after its launch in September 2021, has surpassed the 1 lakh domestic sales milestone. As per the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Volkswagen India recorded wholesales of 99,095 units of the midsize SUV by the end of September 2026; the 905 units needed to achieve the 1,00,000 milestone came in the first half of October. The company has also exported 52,751 units of the Taigun by September, taking its combined domestic and export tally to 1,51,846 units.

As the wholesale numbers (see data table above) reveal, FY2023 was Taigun’s best fiscal year to date, with sales of 21,736 units, when it accounted for 53 percent of VW India’s passenger vehicle sales of 41,326 units. However, demand has tapered since then: the numbers fell 6 percent year on year (YoY) to 20,485 units in FY2024 and 3 percent YoY to 19,910 units in FY2025.
Taigun sales fell to their lowest in FY2026 – 12,912 units, down 35 percent YoY – when it was the second highest-selling model for VW India after the Virtus sedan (22,959 units) and ahead of the Tiguan (1,126 units) and Tayron (238 units). A likely reason for this slump could be that the Taigun feels like an offering from a lower segment compared to midsize SUV leaders such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Victoris.
Nevertheless, in the first six months of FY2027, the Taigun has logged a 4 percent YoY growth with 7,163 units (April-September 2025: 6,891 units). The uptick can be attributed to the launch of the facelifted model in mid-April, which gave the midsize SUV subtle styling updates, more features and a new automatic gearbox.

The Taigun was VW’s first midsize SUV developed on the MQB A0 IN platform under the strategic India 2.0 project. It is a sibling to the Skoda Kushaq, 1,04,863 units of which have been sold since its June 2021 launch.
Autocar India’s buyer’s guide commentary for the MY2026 Taigun states, “A new look, more features and a new AT gearbox for the 1.0 TSI engine address many of the Taigun’s lesser points. The VW feels as solid as ever and remains one of the enjoyable midsize SUVs to drive, especially with the 1.5 TSI engine. However, it’s not as spacious as many rivals and trails on a few feel-good features too.”
