Mahindra is set to debut a CNG variant of the XUV 3XO compact SUV on October 15. Autocar India exclusively reported in April 2026 that the XUV 3XO CNG was in the works, and now a teaser from the brand hints at that development. This will then be the fourth powertrain option on the XUV 3XO, in addition to petrol, diesel and electric. This will also give Mahindra’s most affordable SUV one of the most diverse powertrain line-ups in the segment, alongside the Tata Nexon.
Mahindra currently offers the XUV 3XO with two petrol engine options: a 111hp 1.2-litre MPFI turbo-petrol unit and a 131hp 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol mill. Of these, we expect a factory-fitted CNG kit to be offered with the former, although exact specifications are yet to be disclosed. MPFI engines are relatively cheaper to manufacture and simpler to adapt for CNG, since fuel is injected into the intake manifold. Doing the same with a DI engine is more complex and expensive.
What’ll be interesting to see is how Mahindra packages the CNG tank on the XUV 3XO, as it already has the smallest boot in the segment, and a CNG tank could reduce it further. It remains to be seen if Mahindra opts for a dual-tank setup, as has been popularised by Tata, or if it will fit the tank under the boot. Whatever the case, it may require some re-engineering.
Given the popularity CNG has acquired lately in our market, it makes a strong case for Mahindra to take a plunge in this segment. Not only will it give the XUV 3XO incremental volumes, but it will also help Mahindra meet the more stringent CAFE III norms coming into effect from April 2027, especially since Mahindra’s sales are quite diesel-heavy. Alongside EVs, CNG variants will be key to balancing CO2 emissions from its diesel models.
Mahindra is not a complete stranger to CNG, as it has previously offered this fuel option on some of its commercial pickup range, as well as via conversion kits for the erstwhile Logan and Verito. However, the XUV 3XO will be the first CNG vehicle in its current line-up, with Mahindra joining the likes of Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Kia and Toyota in offering factory-fitted CNG kits. There’s also a lot of headroom for CNG in the compact SUV segment, as currently only the Maruti Brezza and Tata Nexon offer a CNG powertrain option.
Following the XUV 3XO CNG’s debut on October 15, Mahindra could announce its prices in the coming weeks. Expect the CNG version to command a premium of about Rs 1 lakh over the equivalent petrol variant.
