1. Tata Punch
The Punch grabbed the number one spot with 1,23,287 units sold in H1 FY2027. Compared to the year-ago period, it’s a 68 percent YoY growth – the highest in this list. Tata’s multi-powertrain strategy, comprising petrol, CNG and electric versions, helped the Punch get buyers. Its facelift, which arrived in January 2026, came with refreshed looks and feature additions, and it continues to have a solid ride and handling balance that Tata cars are known for.
2. Tata Nexon
With 1,11,919 units sold in H1, the Tata Nexon trails just behind its younger brother. It saw a YoY growth of 25 percent compared to the previous fiscal year. Like the Punch, the Nexon also gets a diverse powertrain line-up, a large variant mix, a long feature list and a good ride and handling setup.
3. Maruti Fronx
Sales of the Maruti Fronx soared 43 percent YoY to 1,10,135 units in H1 FY2027. The Nexa-exclusive SUV offers naturally aspirated petrol, CNG and turbo-petrol options with manual and automatic gearboxes, depending on the trim chosen.
4. Maruti Brezza
Despite sales of over 80,000 units, the Brezza saw a YoY decline of 5 percent. Maruti is expecting numbers to rise after recently introducing the facelifted Brezza, which has received a turbo-petrol engine option, a new 6-speed manual gearbox and feature additions.
5. Hyundai Venue
The Venue’s sales surged 38 percent YoY to 68,836 units in H1 FY2027. The Hyundai compact SUV is available with petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel engines. Only the turbo-petrol and diesel are available with automatic gearboxes.
6. Kia Sonet
The Sonet continues to be a consistent volume driver for Kia. Its sales grew 21 percent YoY to 56,929 units. It comes with the same engine options as the Hyundai Venue and is due for a generation change.
7. Mahindra XUV 3XO
The Mahindra XUV 3XO clocked 52,851 units, up 19 percent – the lowest growth among the models on this list. Mahindra recently rejigged the 3XO’s variant line-up and introduced a CNG version too in a bid to boost sales.
8. Mahindra Bolero
The utilitarian Mahindra Bolero, which is the only compact SUV on this list to offer a flexible 5+2 seating layout, sold 51,720 units, up 30 percent YoY. Available exclusively in a rear-wheel-drive layout, the Bolero is powered by a diesel engine that produces 76hp and 210Nm.
9. Hyundai Exter
Hyundai’s most affordable SUV, the Exter, registered 46,156 units and a solid 40 percent YoY growth. The Korean carmaker’s answer to the Tata Punch is offered with petrol and CNG powertrains.
10. Mahindra Thar (3-door)
With 25,424 units sold, the Thar earned the tenth spot. Compared with the previous fiscal year, the growth was 34 percent. Mahindra recently unveiled a new version of the hardcore off-roader with major mechanical upgrades, added features and an OG suffix. It’s the only 4×4 model in this list and offers petrol and diesel engines.
Sub-4-metre SUVs headed for over 15 lakh sales in FY2027
With 8,13,657 units, the compact SUV segment has already achieved 55 percent of FY2026 sales, which stood at 14,73,422 units. Given the high double-digit growth of 28 percent in the past six months, the ongoing festive season and the tailwinds for zero-emission compact SUVs, one can expect this popular category to surpass the 15 lakh milestone for the first time in a fiscal year in FY2027.
